Oregon Devaluating Drivers Licenses as Federal ID

As reported by the Salem based Statesman and also KGW in a follow up article Feds May Refuse to Recognize OR Drivers License, the state of Oregon is failing to meet federal requirements for identification. To quote KGW –

The REAL ID Act Congress passed in 2005 requires each state to add 39 elements to its procedures for issuing IDs, such as saving images of birth certificates and verifying a person’s Social Security number at license renewal time.

Oregon only meets 28 of these requirements. According to the article, the Oregon legislature passed a law that links these requirements to full federal funding. While I applaud a move for federal requirements to be federally funded, I suspect there are other reasons why. With a social security authentication requirement, won’t this cause all currently licensed illegal residents to be revealed?
